Ok, shame shame on me for not posting in so long! I was doing so well! I know Superbowl Sunday was (ditzy moment) "like, SO two weeks ago!" but I still want to share about it.
I'll confess. I didn't even watch the game, I just want to tell you about that morning. I was invited to share at Mt. Olive Baptist Church (the "black" church in town). It is quite small in numbers, but one of the more impressive churches I have ever been to.
I spoke with the Pastor the week before I went. He was one of those amazing people that I'm pretty sure is going to be in the Bob Frederich/Jack Voelkel category when he is 30 or so years older (not meaning to make these men I admire so much feel like they're old). He has that gentle, loving, attentive, wise spirit that immediately captures my ultimate respect.
I'd never been to a "black" church before (is there a more PC way to say that? I don't think they're offended by it, so whatever). I'd heard stories and watched movies with black gospel choirs. I was expecting a lot of "Praise the Lords," "Amens," etc throughout the service. And there was quite a bit of that, but I had expected it to be over the top-like there couldn't be any down beat without somebody saying "Glooory Jesus!" There were quieter moments. And, every "Hallelujah" and "Thank you, Lord" seemed truly heartfelt.
Aside from my Anglican church, this was one of the most worshipful places I have been to. The service was long and we kept on breaking out into song, but there wasn't any sense of disorder or awkwardness. I had a BLAST worshiping God during that whole 2 hour service! And I really was able to worship Him with all my heart. I LOVE liturgy. I've become an addict, really. I know there are times for being quiet and reverent before our Holy, Awesome God. But there are also times for jumping, shouting and dancing with all our might as we praise our Holy, Awesome God. It's great to be able to do both and still be worshiping with all our hearts.
It was a real joy to worship with my brothers and sisters. And it was fun to greet them all during meet and greet time. Everybody hugs EVERYBODY. I like that. Maybe because that's a little bit closer to the warmer Latin American greeting (a kiss on the cheek) than typical, cooler US greeting (handshake, or maybe a hug if you know the person). I was really "feeling the love" that day. I was so blessed by them. I am really hoping to visit again
I continue to be amazed at the ways in which God works. I'd been trying to contact other churches in the Grove City area-hoping to get to share in some of the bigger ones and gain some financial support from them. But I went to this tiny church (really there were only 20-30 people there) and they let me share for 10 minutes and didn't have to plan my visit multiple weeks ahead of time and they are supporting me. God is SO good!!
So, even though I didn't watch the game (nor the ads), I still had a SUPER Sunday!!!
